'A hero stone is a memorial commemorating the honorable death of a hero in battle' - A 800 year old unique 'Hero Stone' was excavated by the Archaeological team from Virarajendran Archaeological and Historical Center, Tirupur.
The team comprising of S. Ravikumar, K. Thirunavukarasu, K. Ponnusamy and R. Senthil Kumar, found this rare stone, while exploring the river banks of Karadipatti village, situated between Tirupur and Karur.
This sculpture is seen as a master piece dedicated for a ‘hero’ who died protecting the people of his village and their resources by fighting horses which are trained by the invaders from neighbouring villages to combat with people, while they loot the village.
The 135 X 80 cm stone reveals no particular inscriptions relating to the era but the pattern of the design, ornaments, pattern of the saddle and dresses of the hero will certainly be helpful in identifying the period.'The inscription depicts a rare seen, 'the horse kicking the hero's hip and biting his upper body' says S. Ravikumar of the Archaeology team.
