Coimbatore police forms four special teams to control petty crimes

The city police formed four special teams a few days ago to exclusively crack down on house break-ins, chain snatching, motorcycle, four wheeler thefts and pick-pocketing cases.

Deputy commissioner of police, S Lakshmi, said that the four special teams will exclusively focus on these crimes in the city.

To control crimes in the city, police commissioner A Amalraj formed the four special teams a few days ago. Each special team has a police inspector, a sub-inspector and seven other rank police personnel.

According to sources, four chain snatching incidents were reported in the last four days at Peelamedu, Saravanampatti and Singanallur police limits which fall under the east sub division.

Anti-chain snatching squads are already in place. Yet, police are unable to curb chain-snatching incidents. Thus, a special team has been formed to deal with chain snatching cases exclusively.

"Criminals have changed their modus operandi. New offenders have taken to chain-snatching and house break-ins. Thus, it's difficult to identify the culprits. Hopefully these four special teams will crack down on such crimes," said the deputy commissioner.

The special team led by inspector Salairam Sakthivel will deal with house break-ins cases only. A tempo traveller vehicle has been given to the special team. "We have begun conducting meetings with various resident welfare associations in the city to prevent house break-ins. We have advised people to inform the police if they hear or see anything suspicious," said Salairam Sakthivel.
