Nilgiris: The recently- laid road stretch leading to Doddabetta peak, the highest point in Ooty is in dismal condition and it is not motorable say the local residents and tourists.
The 3-kilometers stretch leading to Doddabetta peak was re-laid only last year and the Forest department which is the custodian of the area has closed down the thoroughfare for close to 3 months citing the road laying work.
However, the condition of the road has deteriorated just after months of it being re-laid and the motorists find the mountainous stretch has many potholes and damaged stretches.

"Despite this, in the toll plaza, a tariff of Rs.30 for four wheelers and Rs.10 for two-wheelers and Rs.50 for buses and vans are collected, which make one wonder after traversing by the bad road leading to the peak," said one tourist visited the peak.
Doddabetta peak is situated at 2,637 meters (8,650 feet) and it is one of the prime attractions of visitors to Ooty. Situated a good 7 km from Ooty town, this place has been a favorite tourist destination with a watchtower and telescope facilities provided there.

The tourists appeal to the authorities to repair and relay the road leading to Doddabetta and make it attractive for visitors once again.
