Explaining the stark contrast between bird watching in Coimbatore and abroad, Mr. Richard Bernstein from the National Audubon Society, Michigan, United States has said that youngsters participating in bird watching is a healthy sign for conservation.
Participating at the seventh edition of the annual HSBC Bird Race Coimbatore, Richard pointed out that events like these in the US would only see participation from older people. “Whereas in Coimbatore, most of the participants are youngsters, which is a healthy sign,” he pointed out.

He also shared information about the annual Christmas Bird Count that has been carried out in the United States for more than 100 years.
Sanjay Monga from the India Bird Race explained about the history of the event in the country adding that more than 3000 people participate in the annual event that is held in 15 cities. “While linking bird watchers is an important aspect of the event, documenting the changes in the urban biodiversity using birds as an indicator is another important factor,” he said.

He further added that the events in Mumbai have given interesting data about local environment.
K. Kalidas from Osai said that documentation of birds has helped in reviving the lakes of the city.
P. Pramod, Principal Scientist at Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History and convener of the event said that a book is to be made using the documentation collected in the last six bird races.
