Coimbatore, Jan. 23

In a first, in an attempt to promote value addition and technology in coconut farming, a two days exhibit cum seminar has been arranged for coconut farmers here.

Titled ‘Coconut Festival’, the event is to see more than 3500 farmers from Tamil Nadu and other States, get inputs from experts and also get to know about the new technologies through stalls that are to be put up.

The Festival is to be held on 27th and 28th of January at the Codissia Trade Fair Grounds in the city.

Briefing media persons here, S. Narayanan, Chairman of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Coimbatore Zone, which is organising the event, said that the aim of the festival would be to making coconut trees yield more nuts and increasing the money value of  coconuts by introducing various value additions.

“Our approach is farm to fridge and beyond. Coconut is a product to which value addition is versatile starting from consumables to non-consumables. But farmers are not able to enjoy the benefits totally because of lack of technology. Events like these would help the farmers in that way,” he added.

S. Senthilnathan, Convenor of Agri based Business and Food Processing panel, said that increasing the value addition could eventually boost overall market share of coconut in the country.

“With people becoming aware of the health importance of coconuts, a high potential for production has risen,” he informed.

While 89 stalls are to be put up in the exhibitions, the sessions are to aim at awareness, education and exploratory ideas in marketing coconut products, according to the organisers.
