Farmers up in arms against using cement concrete for building embankments of feeder channel of Chithirai Chavadi dam

Objecting to the renovation of the embankment of feeder channels to Chithirai Chavadai check dam using cement concrete, the farming community of the region have risen up in arms.

Coimbatore, January 23

Objecting to the renovation of the embankment of feeder channels to Chithirai Chavadai check dam using cement concrete, the farming community of the region have risen up in arms.

"The Government should not use cement concrete to build the embankment as it would affect the groundwater recharge of the region and spell doom to agriculture in the region." the farmers said.

The Public Works Department is implementing the renovation works at the cost of Rs.2 crore even as the Chithirai Chavadai dam, which is part of Noyyal river system is a lifeline for farmers and it serves both drinking water needs and irrigation needs of over 4000 acres in Thondamuthur, Veerakeralam, and Sundampalayam areas.

However, the farming community urges the PWD authorities not to use cement concrete but an eco-friendly material to construct the embankments as it would spell doom to farming prospects of the region.

“The Government should take up renovation of Chithirai Chavadai dam and its channels without using cement concrete as there are many alternative building materials to build embankments,” said S. Palanisamy of Tamilnadu Vivasayigal Sangam.
