Check dams to store water flowing into sea: Karnataka

Karnataka Food and Civil Supplies Minister on Thursday said it was for the Cauvery River Water Disputes Tribunal to ascertain whether the check dams built by Karnataka across the Cauvery were legal or not.

Responding to newsmen here on the construction of check dams, he said there was a wrong notion about Karnataka constructing check dams across the river.

“We are building them from the origin of Cauvery till the Tamil Nadu border to store excess water that flows into the sea. We are not trying to take away the share of water entitled to Tamil Nadu,” he said, and felt that Tamil Nadu should also build such structures to store excess water that flows into the sea. “It helps improve the groundwater level and storage in the other nearby water bodies,” he said.

According to him, the issue of sharing water arises when there is a shortfall of rain. “We are ready to follow the tribunal’s directions on sharing water and hold talks with Tamil Nadu,” the Minister added. Mr. Dinesh who is also a national spokesperson for All India Congress Committee (AICC), said that the party was not shocked over its poor performance in the Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and West Bengal. Though BJP won in Assam he claimed that Congress has a better vote share.
