Floral arrangements to welcome tourists

A 30-ft-tall floral replica of the Chennai Central Railway Station will be the highlight of the 120th annual summer flower show that will begin at the Government Botanical Garden in Udhagamandalam on Friday. A total of one lakh red and white coronation flowers have been used for making the 68-ft-long structure.

Joint Director for Horticulture N. Mani said that 10 floral arches made of more than 50,000 roses have been erected to welcome tourists’ on way to the garden. A pair of sparrows sitting on a branch made of 15,000 flowers are among the other floral arrangements. In addition to the nearly 4 lakh cut flowers from dozens of varieties – including Inca Marigold, French Marigold, Petunia, Dianthus, Balsam – on display, tulips imported from Netherlands and 15,000 flower pots are in store to give a feast for the visitors. Mr. Mani said preparations for the three-day annual event started four months ago, and have finally got into shape.

These are in addition to the stalls put up by various government departments and private stalls and competition stalls. The show which is the highlight of the annual summer festival in The Nilgiris has been organsied by the Horticulture Department and the district administration.

While the stage is set for the grand and colourful event, there is a cry for basic amenities including toilets in Udhagamandalam Town and in the botanical garden to help the crowd.

“Toilets in the town are in a very bad shape and they are also fleecing tourists,” says S. Manogaran, president, Coonoor Consumer Protection Association.

“Mere beautification of the garden for the ‘flower show’ and not providing basic amenities is not in good taste. This disappoints tourists,” he said and added that they have been raising the issue with the district administration but the municipality is yet to take necessary action.
