Coimbatore, Jan. 19

In what could be an outrageous act of violent behaviour towards the volunteers who are involved in the rejuvenation of the Singanallur tank here, a local fisherman has rebuked them with derogatory language and had damaged the palm saplings planted by them on the bund of the lake.

The fisherman, along with his son, has also tried to manhandle the volunteers including women and has also burnt some of the saplings.

According to the volunteers, the incident occurred today evening when the volunteers confronted the fisherman, who with an earth mover, was clearing the eastern bund where palm saplings were planted.

When he was questioned by the volunteers, he had verbally abused them claiming that he’ll reportedly kill all the birds that come to the lake so as to take revenge on the volunteers.

Sources claimed that the fisherman is involved in large scale fishing from the lake, which has resulted in lower turnouts of birds. Poaching is also common in the lake and a recent issue brought to light the poaching of squirrels on the bunds of the lake.

A verbal complaint has been filed with the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation regarding the issue.
