“Yaanai Pongal”, the Pongal celebrations for the camp elephants kept in Theppakadu, Mudumalai was celebrated with gaiety.

The camp elephants were bathed and special poojas performed for their welfare of the jumbos at the Vinayakar temple. The elephants were paraded in front of the temple and they also offered prayers to the elephant-headed God.
Pongal was prepared and served to the elephants along with a variety of fruits including apple, banana, watermelon, and sugarcane.
Nilgiris district collector Innocent Divya took part in the celebrations organized for the camp elephants and Kumkis, which are used in tourist safaris and to catch rogue elephants.
Thousands of tourists and locals took part in the festivities of Yanai Pongal and witnessed the festivities.
