In yet another incident of wild elephant attack, an 85-year-old man was attacked and killed by an elephant at Narasipuram in the early hours of today.
According to Forest Department sources, K. Avinashi had encountered the animal while he went to a stream near the Boluvammpatti Reserve Forest. As it was semi-darkness all around, he could not realize the proximity of the pachyderm in the vicinity.
The wild elephants charged and trampled him to death. His body was retrieved and sent for post-mortem Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.
His family was given an immediate compensation by the forest department. This is the second case of fatal wild elephant attack in 2018.
“The man-elephant conflict has risen to alarming levels in recent years due to the destruction of elephants corridors on forest fringes,” say wildlife activists.
