'Employees State Insurance Corporation staff inadequate to run classes'

The Medical Council of India has found the Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) medical college, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi this past February, to be "inadequate to run classes".

A team of MCI authorities who visited the college 10 days ago had expressed their reservation to the ESIC management. Primary among the deficiencies was lack of adequate staff. According to MCI, teaching faculty strength was found to be 12% short of the requirement while the number of supporting faculty like administrative staff was found to be 22% short.

However, ESIC authorities said that the deficiency will not come in the way of commencing classes this year. Soon after the MCI visit, a team of senior faculty from ESI flew to New Delhi and held a meeting with MCI officials where they explained that the inadequacies have been taken care of. The ESIC authorities said that the required staff have been roped in, but are yet to take charge.

"Some of the staff would be transferred from other government colleges to fill in the vacancies. They were waiting for the state assembly election to get over to commence the process,'' ESIC officials told MCI.

"We don't see any hinderance to admit students this year,'' said an ESCI official. The nod to start admitting students to the newly constructed college is all set to come through in the first week of June.

"During the MCI inspection, deficiencies like staff shortage, a fully functioning canteen and mess facilities were pointed out. The team, from Coimbatore Medical College, who were put in-charge of overseeing work in the ESIC medical college, explained that they currently have adequate staff to teach a batch of first-year students. Since first year is mostly theory, ESIC is equipped," said a CMCH official.

"They have also explained that facilities like canteen and mess can begin functioning only once students get admitted and start attending college," he said.

The college authorities also cited the election as a reason for postings getting delayed. "They explained that allocating new government posts with the model code in place could not be done, so there was a delay. Now that the election is over, staff postings for the college should come through in the next few months," he said.
