Injured mare euthanised

A mare that was injured in an accident near Thudiyalur on Saturday morning was later euthanised as veterinarians decided that the animal could not be helped.

According to sources, the three-year-old mare had suffered fractures on its hind limbs – a fracture on one its limbs and a multiple fracture on the other - after a speeding vehicle hit it in the early hours of Saturday.

Calls for rescue

Members of the public called non-government organisation Humane Animal Society and other officials to rescue the animal but help were hard to come by.

Mini Vasudevan of Humane Animal Society said that the NGO received around 60 calls in a short span of time and then sent one of its veterinarians. Veterinarian T. Deepa said that a prognosis revealed that the injuries were so severe that it was impossible to help the animal recover. After consultation with a local government veterinarian they decided to euthanise the animal, she added.
