Farmers petition Collector to streamline the production and sale of neera

Coimbatore, January 2

Members of Tamilnadu Vivasayigal Sangam (non-political ) petitioned district collector to streamline production and sale of palm-based neera in the district.

They submitted to the collector that the government though granted permission to tap neera , there are restrictions regarding implementing it. "Though we have launched the sale of the drink for sale at Sulur, the officials have instructed us to get permission and follow the Government Order, while implementing the tapping and sale of the drink."

"There are stringent clauses in the GO, which necessitate setting up of units at the outlay of Rs.3 crore to Rs.12 crore, which is impossible for the farmers to do" the petitioners said

While appealing to the Collector to enlighten them on the procedures for starting a unit the farmers said that the Government should bear the cost of setting up of neera drink units, to popularize the desi drink among consumers.
