An non-government organization for the rural masses across the State

REST, the Rural Extension Service Trust, was formed a few years ago. to work for the causes of the rural population in Tamil Nadu. "All our projects are aimed at improving the lives of the people who are otherwise neglected." Srinivasan R.. one of the volunteers of REST. Coimbatore says.

On a monthly basis, the core members or volunteers of REST host cluster meetings, to bring together the people of a particular rural area. At these meetings, they discuss ways to improve the lives of these people. Following the meetings. REST ensures that the various issues and suggestions discussed during the meetings are implemented.

During one of the cluster meetings this year, it was decided that the green cover of a village in Pollachi needs to be improved. Soon, a massive sapling plantation drive was organized at Eripatti village in Pollachi. Members and volunteers of REST joined hands with the rural folk in this area and planted saplings here. A volunteer of REST informs us that the project, implemented in January this year, continues to run successfully, with the villagers themselves taking care of the saplings as they continue to grow into trees. The project is supported by Indian Bank. Pollachi.

Since majority of the rural folk depends on agriculture for their livelihood, the NGO organizes workshops and sessions for the benefit of the native farmers. Experts are invited to talk on various subjects. Farmers too have their doubts clarified during such interactions.

As pan of their future projects. REST plans to shift its focus to rural health too.
