Coimbatore, December 28
Mettupalayam residents have to drink water from the Bhavani knowing full well it is polluted. Hence they demand early implementation of Underground Drainage System (UGDS) in Mettupalayam Municipal areas, for which funds have been already allotted.
The denizens of Mettupalayam said that the increasing pollution of the Bhavani river, the prime drinking water source for the town, has left them in a quandary.
"All the sewers in the town are emptied into the river stream without any treatment, which results in the propagation of many diseases including skin ailments. The sewers of the town of Mettupalayam empty into the river at as many as 25 places. The neighboring Sirumugai and Jadayampalayam panchayat areas also are supplied the same polluted water," lament the aggrieved denizens of the town which has a population of 1.45 lakhs.
The once- pristine water of the Bhavani caters to the drinking water needs of over 25 lakh people spread over three districts of Coimbatore, Erode and Tiruppur and also helps irrigate 2.5 lakh acres on its course. Originating in the Western Ghats, it winds through Mettupalayam town before reaching Bhavani Sagar dam.
“Despite chlorination of the water a bad smell emanates from the water if it is stored for more than two days. This is a telltale symptom of its non- portable nature,” said an affected denizen of the town.
“The State Government has sanctioned Rs.92 crore for the UGD scheme, and the tenders were floated on December 22,” Abdul Rasheed, Commissioner of Mettupalayam Municipality, told Simplicity.
"We are forced to drink poison in the name of potable drinking water, Unless and until the UGDS is implemented without any further delay, there is no hope for the pathetic denizens of the town," said A. Jagadeesan of Save Bhavani Trust.
