Valparai, December 28

Estate worker Alagmmal (52) was critically injured when a wild elephant attacked her in Sholayar First Division this morning. The estate workers were on their way to work when the wild jumbo charged at them and seized Alagmmal with its trunk and attacked her. Alagmmal suffered multiple injuries.

The shocked co-workers called an ambulance and the injured woman was moved to Valparai Government Hospital, where first aid was given to her. Later she was shifted to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for further treatment.

Forest officials Vijayan and Manamballi Shekar rushed to the spot and helped the injured. The continuous presence of wild elephant herds in Cinchona, Pannimedu, Paaralai, and Neerar dam have made the estate workers jittery and they are forced to live fearing for their lives.

The incident proves that depredations of wild elephants into human habitations continue unabated in Valparai estate areas to this day.
