Despite HC orders, Coimbatore bomb blast case accused Jafru not released: allege family members

The family members of Jafru, an accused in the Coimbatore blast case, said that he has not been released by the jail authorities, despite orders from the High Court.

It may be recalled that a series of bomb blasts shook several parts of Coimbatore on Feb 14,1998, claiming 58 lives and injuring more than 250 persons. Besides, several crores worth of property was also damaged.

Syed Jaffer Ahmed alias Jafru was one among the accused in the case. He was acquitted in 2009. Later, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for a murder case in Madurai. The Madras High Court ordered the release of Jafru when his sister Bavitha Sultana filed a habeaus corpus petition.

"Despite the orders of the High Court, the Coimbatore Central Prison authorities are refusing to release Jafru," said P.P. Mohan, his lawyer. He requested the State government to release Jafru immediately or he would file a contempt of court petition against the government.
