Tight security cover for counting of votes

Amidst tight security, counting for the 10 assembly segments will begin at the Government College of Technology (GCT) on Thadagam Road at 8 a.m. on Thursday.

A total of 588 staff will be engaged in counting votes guarded by nearly 1,000 police and central armed police personnel. Security will be stepped up at all sensitive places in the city and district.

Counting will begin with postal votes followed by the votes polled in the electronic voting machines. But for Kavundampalayam Assembly segment it will be simultaneously done at 14 tables in the nine other assembly segments. As there were 407 polling stations in Kavundampalayam (more than the other assembly segments) counting here will be done simultaneously at 20 tables.

District Electoral Officer and Collector Archana Patnaik, Police Commissioner A. Amalraj and Superintendent of Police R.V. Ramya Bharathi and other officials inspected counting and security arrangements at GCT on Wednesday.

Diversions

In view of counting of votes, the police have announced the following temporary traffic diversions from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday. Vehicles heading to GCT on Thadagam Road from Maruthamalai Road and Thadagam Road should take Cowley Brown Road.

Vehicles on Thadagam Road that are heading to GCT should take NSR Road from Venkatapuram Junction. Vehicle from the Avinashilingam Home Science College Junction to GCT should take the 7{+t}{+h}Street on Barathi Park Road.

Udhagamandalam


Nearly 600 police and central armed police personnel will be deployed for security arrangements at the Government Polytechnic in Ooty near Fingerpost. This will not affect tourists as they can use Golf Links Road. The police have earmarked separate space on the road for various political parties, separated by barricades, for managing the party cadre who throng the place and to avoid clashes among them.

To ensure that the celebration and tension does not affect tourists, more than 300 police personnel and home guards will be deployed at Coonoor, Kotagiri, Gudalur Devala, Pandalur and Ooty town areas. “A striking force team will be in place in all these towns. We have also identified 55 places across the district and deployed police personnel for picketing,” Superintendent of Police Murali Rambha said.

In Tirupur, the police provided tight security at L. R. G. Government Arts College for Women here, the venue for the counting of votes polled in the eight Assembly segments in the district.

Official sources said around 600 people were posted for duties related to counting of votes.

A total of 14 tables were provided to count votes polled in each of the eight assembly segments in the district. Every table would have a counting assistant, a counting supervisor and a micro observer. Separate blocks of buildings were provided at the venue for counting votes in Tirupur North, Tirupur South, Palladam, Avinashi, Dharapuram, Kangayam, Udumalpet and Madathukulam constituencies.
