Hardly hours after the Class 12 results, large queues were seen outside applications and admissions offices of many arts and science colleges in the city on Tuesday. Admissions for bachelors in commerce seemed to be the hardest to procure on day one. The number of centums in the stream has raised the cut-off astronomically, complain students.
Hoards of anxious parents and students were found at well-known city arts colleges like PSG College of Arts and Science, Dr GRD College of Arts and Science, PSGR Krishnammal College for Women and Avinashilingam University.
The number of centums in the commerce stream have reportedly raised the cut-off in the four main subjects to as high as 795 out of 800. "When we went to buy an application for BCom at a top college in Peelamedu, they advised me to apply for an BA in Economics, when they heard that I scored 82%," said a disappointed commerce student, Khivraj Jaichandran. "They said that even getting admission into a course like BBM or BBA was going to be difficult," he said.
Sources said in many top arts colleges, the cut-offs for admissions into BCom was expected to scale as high as 795 out of 800 in the main subjects. "With 506 centums in accountancy and 358 centums in commerce, colleges are expecting to see hundreds of applications of students who scored above 795," said a correspondent of a leading women's college in the city.
"We have as off Tuesday, confirmed admissions for only students who have scored 795 and above," she said.
The trend also signified that the draw of 'prestigious' courses from the science stream, like engineering and medicine seems to be waning among city's school toppers. While the shift in preference towards the arts stream slowly began almost two years ago, this year the shift is a noticeable one.
