In what could be an alarming situation to the environment, water gushing out from the Irugur Lake on the outskirts of the city is of white foam. It could be because of mixing of chemicals in the lake.
The colour of the water in the lake, which is filled by one of the tributaries of River Noyyal, is green in colour, as against the black colour of Noyyal water.
According to local people, the water from the lake is let out to farmlands nearby to irrigate crops including banana , maize and sorghum in Irugur village. The lake is also one of the important ground water recharge units in the area.
However, recently, the water has been alleged to have been polluted by sewage and chemicals. The outlet is like an arctic stream, with the white foam covering the water. The issue was taken to social media by bird watchers who visited the lake to carry out the winter fowl survey today.
“It would be impossible for organisms to live in the lake. We could only find water hyacinth (eichhornia crassipes) plants in the lake. If the situation is so, even such plants would die soon,” said one of the bird watchers.
She further added that the stench emanating from the lake was intolerable . “People cannot stand here for more than five minutes. It would obviously cause headache,” another birdwatcher opined.
They requested the local people to join hands to revive the lake, which is one of the important feeding grounds of both migrant and local resident birds.
