Kumkis to keep wild tusker at bay in Gudalur

Niligiris, Dec. 14

Vijay and Wasim, kumkis from the Theppakaud Elephant Camp in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR), are posted to keep at bay, a wild tusker that was found roaming near human settlement in Gudalur Taluk here from today.

The kumkis were used to drive the wild tusker back to the forest earlier.

According to forest personnel, the tusker appeared near human settlements a few months back and resided in the area close to banana plantains.

The animal kept coming back to banana farms despite being constantly guided back to the forest.

In an attempt to discourage the animal from feeding on the farm, it was decided to use the kumkis and they were used effectively, driving the animal back into the Reserve.

The kumkis are to be posted in the area for a few more days to keep the tusker at bay.
