Coimbatore Corporation Orphanage for Homeless people run by Eera Nenjam Trust gets kitchen

Coimbatore, Dec. 14

Thanks to the Inner Wheel Club of Coimbatore, Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation's Orphanage for Homeless people at RS Puram, managed by Eera Nenjam Trust got a kitchen facility today.

The kitchen was inaugurated by Mrs. P. Gandhimathi, Deputy Commissioner of Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation.

"We are happy now as the kitchen facility would help inmates to cook as per their wishes," said Mahendiran, Managing Trustee, Eera Nenjam.

"We have been running this home since February 2016 and today it has fifty inmates, all old women and abandoned by their families," he added..

"When we started running this home, there were not much facilities and with the support and help rendered by philanthropists, both within the city and outside, now facilities like good cots, fan and shelves to keep their small belongings have been added, he pointed out.

"With the kitchen getting ready, we are planning now to recruit one or two cooks to cook and feed the inmates", he added.

Talking about the orphanage, Mr. Mahendiran said the journey from 2015 was not a pleasant one at all. "My intention is not to keep the abandoned in homes, but to unite them with their families, so far more than 200 abandoned persons have been reunited," he said.

When asked about his reasons as to why the aged are being abandoned on the streets, Mr. Mahendiran attributed it to the changing mindset of the society which treated old people as a liability.

Expressing concern over lack of understanding and stigma associated with mental illnesses, he said steps should be taken by the state authorities with the support of NGOs and media to remove misconceptions surrounding mental illnesses for it holds the key to preventing the very disturbing trend of abandoning people with mental diseases..

"We are delighted to have a kitchen facility here and the friendly atmosphere in the home keeps me going well" said, an octogenarian and one of the inmates of the home with smile.
