Elephant calf slips into a canal, rescued

Coimbatore, Dec. 12

Forest personnel rescued a month-old elephant calf that had slipped into a canal on Vanabathrakaliyamman Road, near Thekkampatti, here today.

Interestingly, the calf is the offspring of a female elephant that was roaming in the area and was guided back into the Reserve Forest today. The animal constantly kept coming back to the road confusing the forest personnel who guided it back into thick jungle.

It was only later found out that the calf was the reason why the mother was reluctant to move out of the area.

The mother had damaged a few vehicles in the morning.

The calf was later rescued and given coconut water and glucose. It was let inside the Nellimalai Reserve late evening, where it is expected to get united with the mother.
