Coimbatore, Dec. 9
Twenty one cents of land belonging to City Corporation and meant for the construction of Children's Park has been encroached and “our repeated pleas to Corporation authorities to evict the encroachers has not yet yielded any desired results”, bemoaned Mr. Natarajan, Secretary of Raju Naidu Layout Residents Welfare Association.
Raju Naidu Layout with fifty plus houses is an area in Veerakeralam, which falls under 19th ward of city Corporation.

Echoing his views, a resident of the area, on condition of anonymity, has said encroachers have been displaying their blatant disregard for law and this should not be allowed to continue.
When we petitioned the Corporation authorities during October this year seeking action against encroachers of the Corporation land, they initiated action immediately by serving them eviction notice and putting up three boards saying the land belongs to Corporation. But within few days the encroachers removed two boards and now only one board is in existence, lamented Mr. Natarajan.
At present, four line houses with occupants and one house under construction are within the encroached site, alleged Mr. Natarajan.
He also said that attempt is now made by the encroachers to get electricity connection for the house under construction.
Impunity with which law is broken by the encroachers is a cause of greater concern, noted another resident of the layout.
According to RTI activist SP Thiyagarajan, more than 150 Corporation sites in the city have been encroached and it is time Corporation initiated concrete measures to rein in encroachers in the city. An attitude of indifference by the Corporation would only embolden encroachers to persist with their illegal acts, he added.
As far as encroached Corporation land in Raju Naidu Layout is concerned, Corporation should initiate strong action without any further delay, he remarked.
When contacted Mr. Ravichandran, Executive Engineer, Planning, City Corporation, said action would be initiated against encroachers through due process of law.
It is time Corporation authorities moved beyond their present mode of serving notice to the encroachers and putting up boards with a message that this particular land belongs to Corporation and immediately initiate the process of demolishing the buildings erected in the encroached land, said a few of the residents in the Raju Naidu Layout.
