Welcoming voters with flowers, chocolates

A plate filled with chocolates and rose alongside the board was a treat to the eyes and hearts of voters.

‘Election Commission Welcomes You’ was a note in Tamil signed by the 121 Singanallur Assembly constituency zonal team 13 to welcome voters at NG Ramasamy Memorial Higher Secondary School on Kamaraj Road.

A plate filled with chocolates and rose alongside the board was a treat to the eyes and hearts of voters. Zonal officer K.V. Thirumal under whom the 11 booths in that school are located said that it was a very simple exercise to make the voters feel good. “The Election Commission asked us to make arrangements to welcome voters, who in general feel that voting is a very serious exercise and takes place amidst high security. We spent just Rs. 300 for flowers and chocolates from funds allotted by the Election Commission to provide basic amenities at the station,” he said.

According to him chocolates and flowers are kept at the reception table for auspicious occasions. “Voting is an auspicious occasion,” he said. Chocolates were also aimed at helping aged voters, who would have to wait for long to cast their votes.

This simple exercise served the purpose. While it made the long time voters feel good it was a welcoming note for Lakshana Balachandran (20), of Kamaraj Road, and V. Pavithra (20), of Hope College, who had come there to cast their votes for the first time.
