Election officials conducted raid in a popular textile outlet on Commercial Road in Udhagamandalam town on Sunday evening and seized a few tokens that were allegedly distributed to bribe voters.
According to the officials on election duty, the raid was conducted based on a complaint to the election control room.
The complainant alleged that the All India Anna Dravida Munetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) distributed coupons to the voters instead of cash and asked them to exchange the tokens for clothes at the textile outlet. After inquiry, officials seized some tokens on which the name of a hotel run by an AIADMK functionary was printed.
Officials then inquired the functionary who is an elected representative in the Udhagamandalam Municipality. The functionary had claimed that he had given tokens to his hotel employees to get dresses.
However, election officials said that a case would be lodged with the B1 police to initiate legal action against those found guilty of bribing voters.
