Coimbatore, Dec. 02
Residents close to the Sungam By-pass Road face a near drought situation and are forced to buy water, as the drinking water supply to the area was not resumed even after 16 days there.
According to the residents, drinking water is supplied to all the houses through individual pipes once in 10 days. However, this came to a standstill since Nov 15.
“We keep on complaining to the officials, but there was no proper response,” said a resident. With water running out even for basic necessities and lack of bore wells, most of the residents in areas like Shanmugha Nagar, Sivaram Nagar, RG Nagar, Alwin Nagar and KP Nagar are forced to buy water from water tanks.
“Private water suppliers used this chance to fleece us and even a mini-truck with borewell water cost us Rs. 500 and above. Drinking water had also to be purchased,” said K. Sivaram, one of the residents.
When contacted, Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation officials said it was because of a leakage in one of the pipes that catered to the area. “We are rectifying it and water supply would resume from today,” they added.
