Coimbatore Day: Know your city’s popular landmarks

R.S. Puram: Rathinasabapathy Puram came about during the Chairmanship of Diwan Bahadur C.S. Rathinasabapathy Mudaliar (1886 - 1956) as an answer to the plague that had afflicted the older parts of the city. The new area had a school, temple, post office, police station, sports area, commercial area, space for promotion of art, culture and music too. He is considered to be the father of modern Coimbatore. The roads – Thiruvenkataswamy Road, Sambandham Road, Ponnurangam Road, Ramalingam Road, etc., were named after former Municipal Chairpersons or deputy Chairpersons.

Race Course: All Government offices and residences were located in the heart of the city. All work and no play made the officials dull and unhappy. Therefore they chose the wet lands on the northern side of Valankulam for creating a race track for riding and creating residences for the Europeans who lived in Coimbatore during the times of Sullivan. Race Course became a plush residential region with a number of lovely colonial bungalows. The All Soul's Church is a beautiful structure in Race Course and it continues to be well maintained.

Ramanathapuram: The Naicks of Madurai made Coimbatore a big military garrison and they brought in a number of brave soldiers from Ramanathapuram area those days. The soldier community settled down in the Trichy Road area and the place occupied by them came to be known after their original Ramanathapuram. The descendents of those old warriors of the yonder era continue to live in Coimbatore.

Ram Nagar: Ram Nagar came up as the new agraharam over 80 years ago due to plague. The streets are named after patriots and freedom fighters. Many of them including Rajaji have visited the area those days and have roads named after them. The Kodandaramaswamy temple is central to the residents of Ram Nagar and its philosophically is structured like the Pettai Viswesvaraswamy temple in the neighbourhood of Raja street.

Uppilipalayam: The people living here used to belong to the Uppiliyar community and were quite good in building forts besides repairing the breaches in no time. The members of their teams could make cannon balls with the salt that they used to extract from the ground. There was a time when thousands of cannons functioned in Tamil Nadu only due to the constant supply of cannon balls made available by this set of people.

Sundarapuram: Sundarapuram is so named after Sundaribai, the wife of its Founder A.T. Devaraja Mudaliar who used to live in his fabulous residence in Race Course. Sundaribai was the daughter of the Jagirdar of Sivasamudram. Devaraja Mudaliar built his Lotus Mills at Sundarapuram along with a school, temple, post office and quarters for his mill workers. It was kind of a model township then. Devaraja Mudaliar donated a lot of money to the Government Hospital on Trichy Road.

Singanallur: Singanallur is named after the foster mother of Karikala Chola who is believed to have been in this region. Her name was Singamma and this extension of the city was home to a number of learned people. The ancient Ulagalandha Perumal temple here is home to the fabulous Trivikrama bronze belonging to the seventh century and is perhaps the only one of its kind in the world. The agraharam has a number of old tiled roof residences and an old Hanuman temple.

Thorayar Street: This old street is located within the Pettai area and the skilled Thorayars who used to do wedding pandals, temple vahanams used to live here. They were very religious and were known for their Marghazi month bhajans. Their women used to sell exotic vegetables which used to grow near the Ukkadam Big Tank to the people of the Pettai area. A number of them used to maintain flower gardens or Nandavanams and they used to supply garlands and flowers to the temples and people of Coimbatore. Their deft fingers had made many a vahanam for the Gods of Coimbatore.

Oppanakkara Street: The busiest road in Coimbatore is now home to several big retail outlets. Long ago during the Vijayanagar era, the tax collector or Oppanavaru of Coimbatore used to stay here and hence the name. The Rulers of Vijayanagar and Naicks of Madurai added to the prosperity of Coimbatore to a large extent. It was through this road that people came in and they offered their prayers at the Lakshmi Narasimha temple before entering the city.

Kottaimedu: The Coimbatore Fort was built during the Vijayanagar era as it had water bodies as a boundary. The fort was brought down by Tipu Sultan in 1792 shortly after the third Anglo Mysore war. The fort was the headquarters for the military garrison which oversaw 30 palayams up to Danaikenkottai in Sathyamangalam and normally the Polygars or Palayakkarars used to be advised to assemble in the fort for strategic discussions that took place at times of war and peace. Goddess Koniamman, the guardian deity of the city is located here and both the Kottai Sangameswaraswamy temple and Kottai Karivaradaraja Perumal temple are important landmarks of Coimbatore. The Koniamman and Kottaieswaran temples are also here.
