Medical science a boon to premature infants: Neonatologist, Sri Ramakrishna Hospital

Coimbatore, Nov 18: "With the advent of medical science, it is now possible to save infants born around 24-25 weeks", said Dr. Siddhartha Butthavarappu, Head of the Infant unit of Sri Ramakrishna Hospital.

The hospital on Friday observed the "International Prematurity Day" with parents whose children were born premature and underwent treatment at the hospital.



A release from the hospital stated that "The NICU here was launched 25-years-ago and today this department is equipped to handle up to 40 children. High-pressure artificial respiratory equipment, cpap, transport incubator, specialized doctors and nurses are available round-the-clock".

"Over the years, the neonatal mortality in our NICU has come down drastically to 1.5%. Extreme preterm babies admitted here have more than 90% survival and are doing very well in the long term", the release said.

Mr. Ramakrishna, Chief Operating Officer, presided over the gathering. Chief Business Officer Swathy Rohit, and Dean Dr. P. Sukumaran took part in the event.
