Lake Savaari for lake conservation

Coimbatore, Nov. 17

As many as 22 children from a private school here were taken on a three-hour Lake Savaari, an ecological trip, to impart them awareness on lake conservation on Thursday.

The event was organised by the Coimbatore Chapter of the Environmentalist Foundation of India (EFI) to create awareness about lake habitats of Coimbatore.

According to Sanjay Prasad, Coordinator of EFI Coimbatore, the students were taken on a free guide trip to six lakes including Muthannan Kulam, Selvampathy Lake, Narasampathy Lake, Krishnampathy Lake and Selvachinthamani Lake.

“The students were informed about geology, hydrology and the biodiversity of the lake ecosystem,” he said.

He further added that the trip will also help the students understand the lake system and how it acts as reservoirs and feeder channels around the city.

“The history of our lakes are hundreds of years old. Most of the lakes have been designed in a way that they interconnect with each other.

This knowledge base must be taken to the next generation,” he informed.

Prasad also lamented that lack of public of involvement over the years has made conservation difficult. “The lakes and ponds are being constantly neglected by people.

They are further haunted by dumping of waste and encroachment. Hence such trips would help make them aware of the importance of conservation,” he told the Simplicity.

In addition, the students were taught about the biodiversity of the lakes and names of the birds in the lake.
