Infant mortality declines because of critical care nursing: CMCH Dean

Coimbatore, Nov. 16: A day after his office saw a protest of nursing staff of Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH), the Dean of CMCH, Dr. B. Asokan has praised the contribution of the nursing community in the country.

Talking at the 7th National Conference and Workshop on 'Practices for Achieving Clinical Excellence in Critical Care Nursing' at Ganga Hospital here today, Dr. Asokan said that the nursing community has helped reduce infant mortality rate in the country.

“We only see infant mortality rate of 19 per 1,000 in the country, which was more than 20 a few years ago. This has been achieved only because of the quality of critical care nursing in the country,” he added.

He further stated that the life expectancy has also increased to 69 years.

“Maternal mortality has also come down and we are also seeing a good change in other fields,” said the surgeon.

Claiming that the contribution of Government alone would not support the growth of medical care, he also exhorted the private hospitals to contribute their mite.

“The needs and requirements are high in healthcare and the Government may not always be able to cater to the needs. If the private hospitals intervene wherever necessary, our country would become a hot spot of healthcare globally,” the Dean added.

It may be noted that nursing staff of CMCH protested in front of Dean’s Office on Wednesday, demanding filling up of vacancies in CMCH.
