Coimbatore, Nov. 15
Demanding that the the issue of staff shortage be addressed with immediate effect, the nursing staff at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) staged a surprise protest in front of the Dean's office in the CMCH on Wednesday.

During the hour-long protest , the nursing staff pointed out that as per norms there should be 900 nursing staff to manage the inflow of patients in CMCH. But at present, their count was just 218.
Due to this shortage , nurses were forced to work over time to attend to the patients. Such stress on the staff would adversely affect them in providing quality patient care, they said.
Along with shortage of staff, the protestors demanded that permanent sanitary workers should be deployed in CMCH and not contractual labourers.
Later, the protest was withdrawn after Dr. B. Asokan, Dean, CMCH, assured them that he would look into the issue on priority. However, due to the protest and the absence of nursing assistance for an hour the patients in many wards faced considerable hardship.
