Governor's assurance to NGOs on restoration of water bodies

Coimbatore, Nov. 15

Environmentalists and representatives of NGOs met Governor Banwarilal Purohit at the Circuit House here this morning in connection with shrinking water bodies.

"We briefed the Governor on the shrinking water bodies in the city, especially due to encroachments", said K. Manikandan from Kulangal Padhukappu Amaipu.

"The mushrooming encroachments along the bunds have almost exterminated the water bodies, here. Before, it's too late these water bodies should be rejuvenated and restored as they are not only an important source of water but also biodiversity of this region. The Governor patiently heard us and promised to direct the District Collector to initiate necessary action", he added.

The Governor was here in the city to attend the convocation of Bharathiar University on November 14. Post the event, he has been holding a series of meetings with the officials from district administration and other bodies to understand the on-going and proposed developmental activities in Coimbatore.
