Coimbatore, Nov. 15: The State Government has eradicated open defecation in Tamil Nadu up to 81 per cent, Minister for Municipal Administration and Rural Development, S.P. Velumani said here today.
Claiming that the State was setting an example for the country in carrying out the Swachh Bharat Mission, he said that the State would soon eradicate open defecation completely.
He was speaking at an interactive session where Governor Banwarilal Purohit and NGOs along with social entrepreneurs took part in the city on Wednesday,
“We are implementing various development schemes to ensure every household has a toilet and more than 30 lakh toilets have been built in the villages of the State,” said Mr. Velumani.
He further added that the visit of Governor to Coimbatore would ensure the quick implementation of Central Government schemes like Metro Rail.
“Once the Metro rail scheme is implemented, it would prove to be a big boost to the city’s infrastructure. We are confident that the Governor would request the Centre to commence work for Metro Rail soon,” Velumani added.
The Minister also said that the construction work for the proposed 10 km long flyover from Uppilipalayam to City International Airport on the Avinashi Road would begin soon.
