Governor opens up on inspection, Minister says “we’re happy”

Coimbatore, Nov. 15: With the opposition voicing its objection in unison against the sudden reviews and inspections of the Governor of Tamil Nadu, Mr. Banwarilal Purohit in Coimbatore, the Governor has claimed that his visits were intended to “see and appreciate“ the efforts of the State Government.

The Governor was interacting with young social entrepreneurs and members of NGOs and resident welfare associations at the Sunnyside apartments, near Sowripalayam, in the city, here on Wednesday. During the interaction, he said that he would appreciate the developments only if he had seen them with his own eyes.

Mr Purohit, also claimed that he would be visiting all the Districts of the State in the near future and also inspect all the development works.

Starting and ending his address with “Vanakkam” in Tamil, he also stated that he would soon speak in Tamil with the help of a teacher.

Inspecting the works related to the Swachh Bharat Mission, the Governor said that the city and the State were doing well, far ahead of states like Maharashtra from where he hailed.

“There is a good dedication among the young social entrepreneurs here and this will translate well in the near future in terms of development and place the city in the lead,” he said.

He also called for the participation of the citizens of Coimbatore, to help convert slums into better planned and healthy spaces for living.

The governor also requested that youngsters should start a door-to-door campaign to ensure cleanliness and eradicate open defecation in the city. “We should strive to revive the spirit of cleanliness,” he opined.

Appreciating the growth of the literacy rate of the City the Governor said that while Coimbatore's literacy rate was 89.23 per cent, the national literacy rate was only 74.04 per cent.

He had earlier inspected the public private participation (PPP) model toilets at Gandhipuram, and also participated in the mass cleaning drive in the Gandhipuram bus terminus. He also inspected the solid waste management initiatives being carried out in the Sunnyside apartment.

Earlier, Minister for Municipal Administration and Rural Development S.P. Velumani, said that the visit of the Governor has brought happiness to everyone.

“He has assured us that he would help bring most of the schemes from the Centre for the development of the State,“ the Minister claimed.
