Coimbatore, Nov. 11: Citing the announcement of S.P. Velumani, Minister for Municipal Administration, in the Assembly regarding empowering the local bodies, the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) has urged the Minister to pass a GO in this regard.
On June 21, the Minister in the Assembly apprised that henceforth, the Government will vest more powers with the local bodies in decision making, particularly for builders to obtain clearances easily.
At present, the Housing Department provides permission for planning and the Municipal Administration department deals with building plan approvals. This process not only delays the clearance process but also slows down the process of availing assistance from banks and the government.
In a bid to expedite the whole process, the Minister had announced that the local bodies would be henceforth vested with additional powers for directly issuing clearances for larger residential buildings, commercial buildings, public buildings and special buildings. However, an appropriate GO has not been passed in this regard till date, making the announcement 'futile', a statement from the ICCI said.
Hence, Vanitha Mohan, President of ICCI, Coimbatore Chapter, has requested the Minister to pass a GO at the earliest and facilitate smooth clearance in getting building approvals.
