Padma Shri winners from cotton city felicitated

The Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Monday felicitated Coimbatoreans Mylswamy Annadurai and Arunachalam Muruganantham, a social entrepreneur for receiving this year's Padma Shri award.

Annadurai was awarded Padma Shri for his contributions towards the research and development in the field of space science, and Muruganantham for inventing low cost sanitary napkin, and manufacturing machine.

Annadurai, the director of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) satellite centre, Bengaluru said the soft lander and lunar rover of the Chandrayan project will be ready in the next two years. "According to the earlier plan, we were supposed to collaborate with Russia. Now, we are developing everything indigenously. We hope to finish it in the next two years," Annadurai said.

The event's chief guest M Manickam, executive chairman of Sakthi Sugars, congratulated the winners for their achievements and service to the society.

In his speech, Annadurai recalled the constant motivation he received in his childhood days. "The motivation has made me who I am today," he said. Annadurai said India will be able to launch 10-12 satellites every year, for which businessmen from Coimbatore should come forward and help ISRO.

Arunachalam Muruganantham said he is happier during the felicitation in Coimbatore than he was while receiving the award in New Delhi. "Every time I visit a university or travel abroad, I identify myself as a Coimbatorean. I urge the youth to work with keeping social welfare in mind than aiming to fulfill personal goals," he further said
