In order to reduce electricity consumption in the city, one of the Centre’s flagship initiatives, UJALA (Unnat Jeevan by Affordable LEDs and Appliances for All) scheme, was launched at the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) office here today.
Now Coimbatoreans can get LED bulbs, tube lights and energy efficient fans manufactured by leading manufacturers at a subsidised price in the stores to be opened at various places. As of now, one store has been opened in the TANGEDCO office at Tatabad.

According to officials, the prices have been subsidised more than 50 per cent compared to the market price of these products. While the price of 9 watt LED bulbs is Rs. 70 against a market price of Rs. 170, the price of 20 watt LED tube lights here is Rs. 220 against a market price of up to Rs. 400. The price of 50 watt BEE 5-star rated energy efficient fans is Rs. 1,200 against a market price of above Rs. 2,400.
Speaking to SimpliCity, T. Ramesh, Deputy General Manager and Regional Manager of the State of Energy Efficient Services Limited (EESL), said that his organisation has planned to open around 40 distributing centres in the City. “The first 20 centres will start functioning from Monday and the rest will be opened in due course ,” he said.
He also added that railway station, bus stands and other places where public gather in large numbers would be seen as potential target areas for setting up the centres.
“We have sold eight lakh LED bulbs, 1.9 lakh tube lights and 36,000 fans in Tamil Nadu ever since we started in April 2017. Close to 50 centres are functioning till date in places like Chennai, Thiruvallur, Tiruchi and Kancheepuram. This will be extended to 17 more districts in the near future,” Mr. Ramesh said.
A total of 27 crore LED bulbs have been sold nationwide. The bulbs are procured from leading manufacturers in bulk quantities , according to sources. “Consumers can buy the products by showing an identify proof so that they can avail of the three-year warranty offer,” said officials.
