Coimbatore, Nov 6: "Well, it wasn't this bad some time ago. But now, it's a nightmare for the motorists who have to experience a roller-coaster ride", said K. Rajangam, a cycle shop owner at the U-bend under pass of North Coimbatore flyover.
The U-bend is regarded to be one of the important junctions as it connects the buzzing Cross Cut Road to Patel road and Ram Nagar. Due to ill-maintenance, the U-bend is completely filled with potholes throughout the stretch. Motorists often tend to slip off the potholes often that are almost three feet depth. To avoid the potholes, motorists swerve to the side or towards the middle of the road leading to traffic congestion and accidents.

"Traffic moving at snail pace has become the order of the day. Owing to this, flow of traffic at peak hours in the morning and evening is highly erratic", a daily user of this U- bend shared.
Though the U-bend was initially designed to cater to the need of two and four-wheelers, the entry of heavy truck vehicles have disfigured the surface of the road.

"While the motorists struggle to negotiate through the U-bend, some private taxis and vehicles of shop owners of the surrounding areas have made this space as their 'private parking', which has further narrowed down the passage", lamented, Mr. Murugan, a professor at a private college.

He also added that in the past, several accidents had been reported at the U-bend. "Importantly, a speed breaker should be laid at the point where the under pass starts from Cross Cut Road. To manage the surge in vehicular population in the city, such under passes play a crucial role. They connect places in the shortest route possible and reduce the traffic congestion in arterial roads and flyovers. The U-bend has to be completely relaid like the one in Uppilipalayam. The officials should act promptly to identify such battered roads and set them right before it becomes wholly unusable."
