Fear grips Valparai residents as leopard continues its rampage

Coimbatore, Nov 2: The residents of Karumalai Estate are in panic after a leopard killed a cow in the early hours of Thursday. A similar incident was reported on October 27 after a leopard preyed on a poultry farm in Urulikal Estate. It was during the same incident, a 12-year-old boy had a narrow escape from the leopard after seeing it face-to-face.

The residents of these estates have urged the forest officials to set a trap for the leopards that stray into residential and estate areas. "We are unable to work at peace", an estate worker at Karumalai estate lamented.

However, the forest officials have claimed that even after several warnings to avoid rearing cattle in estates and hilly areas, people paid no heed to them. Cattle movement is the major reason for leopards to stray into estates, they contend.
