Coimbatore, Oct 30: The Madras High Court today has passed an order to remove all advertisement banners at traffic signals across the State. Responding, to the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Coimbatore Consumer Cause, the HC has advised the administration not to allow display of advertisement banners at traffic signals and not to renew the advertisement contracts after their current contract term.
Following the order by the state government to remove all hoardings and centre medians from the highways, the advertisers chose to use traffic signals for displaying their advertisements due to high visibility rate.
"Such hoardings at traffic signals compromise the road safety as they often distract the attention of the motorists and pedestrians. Hence placement of such hoardings at signals should be completely banned," said the PIL lodged by Coimbatore Consumer Cause.
It is to be noted that on 25th October the Madras High Court has directed the State government to ensure that banners and flex boards in public places do not carry photos of living people.
The order was passed after a PIL was filed by a resident of Chennai. Justice S Vaidyanathan ordered that, if at all the authorities allow to display banners, sign/flex boards, the officials should ensure that photographs/pictures of living persons are not depicted. The Court also ordered the state to keep a check on those who litter the walls by painting/drawing and to ensure a clean atmosphere in the state.
