Pon. Radhakrishnan a hindrance to AIIMS at Sengipatti: Mani Shankar Aiyar

Says Congress will support a protest in New Delhi if people of the area come together

Union Minister of State Pon. Radhakrishnan’s “noxious stance” is the reason for the present imbroglio surrounding the establishment of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Sengipatti in Thanjavur district, former Union Minister and Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar said here on Saturday.

Speaking at an all-party demonstration held to condemn the “pusillanimous delay” in making public the selection of Sengipatti as the site for the proposed AIIMS in Tamil Nadu, Mr. Aiyar pointed out that the site was found suitable by an expert team, but the considered decision was being held hostage by the stance of Mr. Radhakrishnan. He was the hindrance to the AIIMS coming to Sengipatti, Mr. Aiyar said.

Cadre belonging to all political parties and the public from the delta region must raise their voice to make the AIIMS at Sengipatti a reality. If people wanted to draw the attention of the Centre by organising a struggle at Jantar Mantar, the Congress would facilitate it, Mr. Aiyar said.

Tiruvaiyaru MLA and DMK south district secretary Durai Chandrasekaran led the demonstration in front of the Head Post Office in which party North district secretary S. Kalyanasundaram, former Union Minister .S. Palanimanikkam, cadres and leaders from CPI, CPI (M) and MDMK participated.
