Open and clogged ditches open gates for dengue in Kalikkanaickenpalayam

Coimbatore, Oct 29: Even as the dengue outbreak has created a fear psychosis in the entire State, official lethargy has resulted in the occurrence of the disease at Kalikkanaickenpalayam village on the outskirts of Coimbatore.

Open ditches that have been clogged because of plastic wastes and an unclean environment, which has been left unattended to by the officials, has reportedly caused dengue symptoms in a nine-year-old girl in the village. The girl is currently being treated at the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) in the city.

According to S.Jothimani (60), grandfather of J.Soudhika, the girl had shifted to her grandparents’ home at Anna Nagar in the 6th ward of the village. She had been earlier living with her parents at Kummittpathi village near Madukkarai.

A week ago, she was down with high fever and was taken to the Thondamuthur Government Hospital. The doctors there had advised the family to shift the girl to CMCH since she had symptoms of dengue including decreasing blood platelet level and she was taken to CMCH in a 108 ambulance.

She was initially treated in the Intensive Care Unit at CMCH and now her condition is stable, according to doctors at CMCH. However, the residents of her village are apprehensive of the dengue outbreak in the locality because Soudhika's is the first dengue case in their village.

K.M.Bharathan, one of the villagers, alleged that despite repeated complaints, officials have failed to close the open ditches in the village. While this is a problem, lack of dust bins in the village has invariably converted the ditches into dump yards, thereby clogging the sewage.

“One can see plenty of plastic wastes all over the village and the sewers are full of them. The cleaning is not done regularly and the sewers are often overflowing,” added Bharathan.

When the SimpliCity attempted to contact the officials concerned, they were not available for comment.
