Citizens honoured for celebrating 'Green Deepavali'

The City Corporation has honoured the citizens who had celebrated a 'Green Deepavali' i.e. pollution-free Deepavali, yesterday, Oct 27.

Prior to the festivity, a whatsapp number was announced by the Corporation requesting people to send in their pictures/videos or write-ups on how they celebrated Green Deepavali. Those people who celebrated Deepavali responsibly and meaningfully by contributing sweets and new clothes to the needy and those residential complexes who chose to refrain from bursting crackers conveyed their experiences through whatsapp.

Among 140 entries received, 34 were chosen. As a token of appreciation, prizes and certificates were distributed by Corporation Commissioner Dr. K. Vijayakarthikeyan. to the winners.

Srinithi Mohan, Founder of Shiksha Montessori and Play School and also a certified Montessori trainer who was one of the recipient of the Green Deepavali Award shared that "Well ahead of the festivity, we sensitized the students of age 2 to 6 yrs on the ill-effects of bursting crackers and the environmental hazard attached to it. We created the trunk of a tree through paper, cut leaf-shaped structures and made the little ones write a message on the leaves to protect the environment. At last, the leaves with messages were added to the trunk. This was the artwork that we sent to the Corporation's green deepavali whatsapp number. And, we at Shiksha are glad to get recognised for our efforts".
