"Revised autorickshaw rates from January 1", Unions decide

Coimbatore, Oct 28: The autorickshaw unions here have decided to revise the fares from the New Year.

"From Jan 1, 2018, Rs. 30 would be charged for the first 1.5 km, and for additional km Rs. 15 would be charged", said the union members at the autoriskshaw drivers association meet held here today.

Members of the CITU, AITUC, INTUC, SPF and ADP assembled today to discuss the pressing issues faced by the auto drivers. It was unanimously decided to revise and streamline the existing auto fare to Rs. 30/- for first 1.5 km and Rs.15/- for additional kilometres.

"Even if the Government were to reject our revised fare proposal, still we would go ahead in implementing the same from January, 2018", said the union members.

During the meet, it was planned to organise a comprehensive meeting on 17th December to discuss the practical issues faced by the auto drivers and the 'intrusion' of private players in the industry.

"For a longtime, the auto fares have not been streamlined at all. And, mostly the auto drivers quote unfair charges. And, this practice has led to their downfall as well. Proliferation of call taxis like Ola, Uber and corporate entities providing auto services like Jugnoo are nothing but a result of long-time biased rates proposed by the auto drivers", said a resident in Tatabad.
