Chhattisgarh police arrest former journalist near Delhi

The Chhattisgarh police arrested a former BBC journalist, Vinod Verma, from his Ghaziabad residence at four a.m. on Friday on charges of extortion and blackmailing a State minister.

Mr. Verma has claimed that he is being framed.

“I have a sex CD of a Chhattisgarh Minister. He is Rajesh Munat and that is why the State government is not happy with me,” Mr. Verma, who is also a member of the Editors Guild of India, said.

Acting promptly on a complaint filed on Thursday by Prakash Bajaj, a member of the Chhattisgarh BJP’s IT cell, the police took a flight to Delhi on Thursday night and arrested Mr. Verma. A case has been registered against him under various sections at the Pandari police station in Raipur.

Ghaziabad police sources said a team of the Chhattisgarh police raided a shop in Delhi and confiscated 1,000 prints of the purported sex video.

Based on the interrogation of the shopkeeper, the police raided Mr. Verma’s house in Indirapuram.

“We have come to know that Chhattisgarh police confiscated a large number of CDs from Verma’s residence as well. They also took journalist’s laptop and pen drive,” a senior Ghaziabad police officer said.
