After being halted in 2016, the famed vintage steam loco of the Nilgiris is now on show for public at the Udhagamandalam Railway Station. Bearing train No X37386, the steam loco was manufactured in Switzerland in 1918 and came into service in 1921.
Until 2011, the loco was fired by coal after which it was converted into using furnace oil. However, the loco was in service in between Mettupalayam and Coonoor till 21st May, 2016.
A press release from the Southern Railways Division states that "As per the instructions of Hari Shankar Verma, DRM, Salem dicision, the steam loco has been refurbished and is now on display at the famed Udhagamandalam Railway Station. The Salem Division is the only Division in the Southern Railway to display vintage locomotives in maximum number of locations, the earlier locations being Coonoor, Coimbatore and Salem Railway Division Office."
