"Every year the incidence of abandoning new-born is on the rise. And, the sad part is most of them are female babies" said Dr.R.Soundaravel, Resident Medical Officer, CMCH.

On 17th October, Velammal, a mentally-challenged woman, gave birth to a healthy baby girl at CMCH. Post delivery, the mother abandoned the new-born at the Hospital and went missing. The authorities at CMCH took custody of the baby and fed her mothers' milk through the 'Milk Bank' functioning there.
In a similar incident at a private hospital in the city, a mother went missing after delivering a healthy baby girl, on 5th October.
"Both the abandoned babies were handed over to a government-recognized Orphanage at Kinathukadavu. In 2017, so far 9 new-borns have been abandoned by their parents while in 2016, it was 11. The thing to be noted is most of them are 'female' children", the RMO said.
When asked about the cause for such a situation, Dr. Soundaravel said "The main reason is poverty. Most of such parents are stuck in poverty that they can’t afford to take care of their children’s education or any of the basic needs. Hence, they abandon them. And, illicit relationship before marriage is also another factor resulting in such a tragedy".
