Gandhipark circle becomes breeding place for mosquitoes.

Gandhipark circle fountain is gradually becoming the breeding ground for mosquitoes.

The residents of the area have requested the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) officials to take immediate action in this regard.

Gandhipark circle in the city connects areas like RS puram, Gandhipuram, Townhall and Ukkadam. Nearly one lakh vehicles pass through this road and more than 200 people are living in the vicinity of this circle.

Two fountains built on this circle are not properly maintained. Hence, rain water stagnates near the fountains. The fountains are 4 to 5 feet deep and that helps mosquito breeding. Hence the residents are requesting the corporation officials to clear the water.

“CCMC officials are inspecting residential houses, hotels, shops and other places in the city to identify the potential areas for breeding mosquitoes. If there is a chance then they are issuing notices. Sometime they are imposing fine on the concerned persons. Will CCMC initiate any step in this regard?. We have informed the officials but there has been no improvement,” said S Rajarathinam, a resident of Gandhipark.

Recently CCMC inspected various areas in urban and rural areas and collected a fine of Rs 6.11 lakhs from the offenders in connection with allowing breeding of mosquitoes in their places. Notices have also been issued to a number of people.

People there alleged that residents of Gandhipark area have been diagnosed with viral fevers and other health issues. “Dengue fever is spreading all over Tamilnadu despite the officials are taking steps. It is our duty to keep home and nearby areas clean. But it is the duty of the officials to maintain hygiene in the Government offices and places like this. If houses are not clean and water is stagnating there, then they are fined But how about CCMC officials who are not clearing the stagnant water near the circles ? What sort of action can be initiated against them?,” asked Kuppuraj, an activist.

CCMC officials said steps will be taken as soon as possible to clear the stagnant water near the circle.

CCMC commissioner, Dr.K.Vijayakarthikeyan said "Will follow up as soon as possible and take strict action."
